Strawberries

I think everyone has a favourite that they can't give up. I'm not talking about addictions or any kind of harmful health destroying addiction, that's a different topic and not even appropriate. I'm talking about something that is so beautiful or feels so good or is so delicious that we can't help ourselves. Strawberries and ice cream are such things in our house. We can't (or won't) give either of those up, even in winter. Luckily we don't have to, at least my daughter doesn't. Ice cream is available almost everywhere in winter. Of course it gets the surprised or even disapproving look, we're used to that, but strawberries are a bigger deal. Talking to my mother, I always tell her how beautiful, big and delicious strawberries were in the shop at the time, which, by the way, cost as much here in winter as they do in central Europe in the ripening season. My mum is always surprised, because she also looks in the shop, but there is nothing. Unbelievable. We didn't move from the 3rd world either, I thought we weren't from some backward underprivileged country, but I have to realise day by day that maybe we are. I am grateful because fruit, my daughter's favourite fruit, is available and affordable.
